Tenerife Cycling Tours

Tenerife is one of Europe’s top cycling destinations. But not all areas are the same. Many cyclists head to the South, but that is only because the South is the most touristy place in Tenerife. As to cycling, the North offers a better experience for those looking for scenery, better cycling weather, fewer crowds with less traffic on better roads and also many more route alternatives.

Weather and Climate: North Is Slightly Cooler and a lot Greener

The South of Tenerife is dry and hot, especially in summer. This can make long rides uncomfortable. The North has a slightly cooler climate with more greenery. You can often find that in summer if the south is above 30 degrees Celsius the North might be slightly under 30 degrees Celsius, which I a lot more comfortable for the beautiful climbs.  This makes it ideal for cycling throughout the year.

  • North: Slightly Cooler, more shade (More trees), better for climbing.
  • South: Hotter, dry, limited shade.

Scenery and Landscape: North Is More Diverse

North Tenerife has green mountains, coastal roads, and forest trails. It gives cyclists a changing landscape. The South is more arid, with fewer trees and less natural variation.

  • North: Lush forests, ocean views, traditional towns.
  • South: Dry, brown hills, built-up tourist zones.

Road Quality and Traffic: North Is Quieter

The roads in North Tenerife are well-maintained and quieter. Traffic is lighter, and drivers are used to cyclists. In the South, roads can be busy due to high tourism.

  • North: Less traffic, smoother climbs, relaxed pace.
  • South: Tourist traffic, crowded resorts, less relaxing.

Cycling Routes and Elevation: North Offers More Variety

North Tenerife has routes for all levels. From long climbs up Mount Teide to scenic coastal rides with a more rolling terrain, the North offers both challenge and beauty. The South has some flat routes but fewer scenic options.

Popular routes in the North include:

  • Puerto De La Crus to La Orotava to Mount Teide: A famous climb through pine forests with cooler air and stunning views.
  • Puerto de la Cruz coastal loop: A scenic route towards Buenavista Del Norte with ocean views and rolling terrain. It of course still has some climbs but also a lot of rolling terrain.
  • Puerto De La Cruz To Anaga: One of the most beautiful rides on the planet is through the national park of Anaga. Beatiful Sea views on the Santa Cruz side as you ride up into a rain forest. A very long ride from Puerto De La Cruz for experienced riders but it can also be done from Tacoronte or La Lagauna via transport.
  • Puerto De La Cruz To Punto del Hidalgo: A tough but lovely coastal route and especially beautiful if you do mirador El Boquerron on the way back!
  • Puerto De La Cruz To Masca: Another unmissable route through the beautiful historic Valley Of Masca!

Culture and Local Experience: North Is More Authentic

The North has more traditional towns and local culture. You can stop in Guachinche restaurants, try local food and enjoy a slower pace. The South is more commercial with large resorts and chain restaurants.

  • Guachinches are small, family-run restaurants serving homemade Canarian food. Meals often include grilled meats, papas arrugadas (sea salted potatoes), mojo sauces, local cheese, and house wine. They’re extremely affordable, friendly, and full of character.

Towns in the North are less commercial and more welcoming to visitors looking for real local experiences.
